Opposition

What It Is

An opposition forms when two planets are exactly 180° apart — directly across the sky from each other. The orb of influence is typically 6–8°. Oppositions always connect planets in opposite signs of the zodiac: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, and so on. These opposite signs share the same axis and quality, but express it through fundamentally different elemental lenses — which is what makes their relationship so electric and so challenging.

The opposition is often described as a tug-of-war. But a more useful image might be a full moon: maximum illumination, maximum tension between the two luminaries, and the feeling of something being pulled toward its fullest possible expression. The opposition doesn't destroy — it reveals.

Energy & Themes

The opposition creates awareness through contrast. The two planets can see each other clearly — perhaps too clearly — and what one planet represents tends to be projected onto external situations or other people. Relationship dynamics often carry opposition energy: you find the "other side" of the tension embodied in someone you're dealing with.
